What even is a "Millennial Mama?"

Friends, a millennial mama is any mama out there identifying with the millennial generation. According to google that is people born between 1981-1996 with some variances of a year or two depending on the source. Beyond our birth year, millennials are a generational group that have experienced events such as, the September 11th attack on the twin towers, the rise of the internet and social media, cellphones, the Great Recession, the election of the first black president, Barack Obama, mass school shootings, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Even further, we are the generation that was promised a great future if only we worked hard, went to college, and conquered our career. We are flexible, adaptable, resilient women.

As millennial mamas, we are mom's with small children or even just starting to have babies amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Navigating social distancing while trying to foster social growth during those integral social development stages. We are the moms influenced by our parent's parenting style, whom were often absent and leaning more toward authoritarian styles. We are thus self-sufficient, hard workers, rule followers, caretakers, and background people. Influences of gentle parenting are everywhere and we are trying our best to navigate raising a child with healthy emotional awareness and regulation without being ridiculed for children that act like children rather than small adults. We are breaking generational trauma.

All in all, we are warriors who never asked to be warriors but did anything because we know what the right thing to do is and simply do that. It isn't easy. We didn't get what we were promised and we are making due with what we were left with; student loan debt, poor economy, poor housing market, rise of cost of living, an extreme spectrum of human equality and human rights, debilitating political climate, and blows to overall mental health and health care access. We are in survival mode more often than not.

This blog is for all of us; anyone identifying with the millennial mamas. You will not be overlooked here, and this place is safe to read, reflect, share, give or receive advice if you want it whether it be about growing up a millennial or navigating motherhood as a millennial or more this is your place. Welcome to millennial mamas.
